I confirm Joe’s method worked for me.
I just found illogical we have to specify a specific cell in the formula. It would have been more understandable to write something like “= LEN() > 20″ so it would refer to the cell currently active.

Anyway, it works, that’s the main thing. Thanks for the tip

I was having trouble getting the format to work as well.
The solution was to set the “applies to” to a range and the “formula” to an individual cell.
= LEN(P1) > 20
Applies to =$P:$P
